Your first visit to a San Francisco dispensary

Your first visit is simple: bring a valid government photo ID that shows you’re 21 or older (18 or older for medical patients), know that California limits how much you can buy in a day, expect state excise and sales tax on top of the shelf price, and plan to use what you buy in private, not in public. Here’s each part, the way we’d explain it at the counter at Marina Greens.

What to bring

Every customer needs a valid, unexpired government photo ID showing they’re 21 or older (18 or older for medical patients), every visit. California lets a store accept any of these:

  • A driver’s license or state ID card, from any US state
  • A US or foreign passport
  • A US military ID

The rule is in the state’s cannabis regulations (4 CCR §15404, Department of Cannabis Control, revised July 1, 2026). An expired ID, a photo of an ID, or an ID without a birth date doesn’t qualify.

Medical patients: bring your photo ID and your physician’s recommendation or your county medical marijuana ID card. Patients 18 to 20 can shop with a recommendation or county card, as state law allows. Our medical patients page explains what changes for patients.

How much you can buy in a day

The limits are per person, per day, set by the state in section 15409 of the Department of Cannabis Control’s regulations (4 CCR §15409):

Per dayAdult-use (21+)Medical patient
Flower28.5 grams (about an ounce)8 ounces, or more if your recommendation says so
Concentrate8 grams, including the concentrate inside vapes and ediblesCounted toward the 8-ounce limit
Immature plants612

You can’t combine the two: a medical patient shopping on a recommendation uses the medical limit, not both.

What it costs, with tax

The price on the shelf isn’t the price at the register. Two taxes are added:

  1. California cannabis excise tax: 15% of the price. It went to 19% for a few months in 2025 and has been back at 15% since October 1, 2025 (CDTFA). It’s listed on your receipt.
  2. Sales tax: 8.625% in San Francisco, charged on the price after the excise tax is added.

So a $40 item comes to about $50 at the register. San Francisco’s own cannabis business tax is suspended through 2035, so there’s no city cannabis tax on top.

A county medical marijuana ID card removes the sales tax, not the excise tax. A physician’s recommendation alone doesn’t change your tax.

Paying: we take cash and debit cards, not credit cards, and there’s an ATM in the shop. You pay at the counter when you pick up an order ahead. We run dated deals every day of the week and a few standing discounts; the Deals page lists them.

Order ahead, or browse in person

The whole menu is on our site, live from our shelves. You can build an order online and pick it up at the counter, or come in and look around. Either way, bring your ID: we check it at pickup too. We don’t deliver.

What to ask a budtender

You don’t need to know the vocabulary. Say what format you’re after (flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles) and how much you want to spend, and ask:

  • What’s on the label? Every product lists its THC (and CBD) content. For edibles, ask for the THC per serving and per package.
  • Can I see the lab results? Licensed products are tested; we’ll show you the numbers.
  • What size is it? Eighths, quarters and pre-roll packs differ a lot in price per gram.
  • What’s on deal today? Each day of the week has its own dated deal.

We can tell you what a product is and what’s on the label. We can’t give medical advice: that conversation belongs with a physician.

Where you can use it (and where you can’t)

California law (Health and Safety Code §11362.3) and San Francisco rules say:

  • Not in public: not on sidewalks, in parks, at outdoor public events, or anywhere tobacco smoking is banned.
  • Not in a car: no use while driving or riding, and no open container in the vehicle. Keep it sealed and in the trunk.
  • Not near schools: no smoking within 1,000 feet of a school, day care or youth center while children are there.
  • Not on federal land: the Presidio, Crissy Field, Fort Mason and Alcatraz are federal parkland, where cannabis stays illegal.
  • Not where the owner says no: landlords and hotels can ban it on their property, and most hotels do.

Private homes, with the owner’s OK, are fine. So is the Marina Greens Lounge, our consumption lounge inside the shop.

First-visit questions

Do I need a medical card to shop?

Not if you’re 21 or over: a valid photo ID is enough. A recommendation or county card is what lets patients 18 to 20 shop, and it unlocks the medical limits and the sales tax exemption.

Can I use a foreign passport?

Yes. A valid passport from any country is an accepted ID.

Are the menu prices with tax?

No. Shelf and menu prices are before tax. Expect about 25% more at the register: 15% excise, then 8.625% sales tax on the total.

Do you deliver?

No. Order ahead on the menu and pick it up at 3109 Fillmore St, open 8 AM to 10 PM every day.
