Buying cannabis in San Francisco as a visitor

If you’re 21 or older with a valid government photo ID, you can buy cannabis at any licensed San Francisco shop, and a passport from any country counts. What trips visitors up isn’t buying it: it’s where they can use it. Public spaces, cars, most hotels and the city’s federal parks (the Presidio, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, Alcatraz) are all off limits.

Who can buy, and which IDs work

California’s adult-use market is open to anyone 21 or older, resident or not. A licensed store can accept (4 CCR §15404, revised July 1, 2026):

  • A driver’s license or state ID from any US state
  • A passport from any country
  • A US military ID

The ID has to be valid, unexpired and show your photo and birth date. Bring the physical card or passport; a photo of it won’t do.

How much you can buy

Per person, per day, set in section 15409 of the state’s cannabis regulations (4 CCR §15409):

  • 28.5 grams of flower (about an ounce)
  • 8 grams of concentrate, which includes the concentrate in vapes and edibles

Medical limits are higher, but they need a recommendation from a California physician.

What you’ll pay

Shelf prices don’t include tax. At the register, California adds a 15% cannabis excise tax, then San Francisco’s 8.625% sales tax on the total. A $40 item comes to about $50. There’s no city cannabis tax on top: San Francisco has suspended it through 2035.

We take cash and debit cards, not credit cards, and there’s an ATM in the shop.

Where you can use it

This is the part to plan for. Under California law (Health and Safety Code §11362.3) and San Francisco’s rules:

PlaceAllowed?
Sidewalks, parks, beaches, outdoor public eventsNo
In a car, even parked; open packages in a carNo: keep it sealed and in the trunk
Within 1,000 feet of a school or day care when children are thereNo smoking
The Presidio, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, AlcatrazNo: federal parkland, where cannabis is illegal
Hotels and short-term rentalsOnly if the owner allows it; most hotels don’t
A private home, with the owner’s OKYes
A licensed consumption loungeYes

The federal-land rule surprises people: much of San Francisco’s waterfront west of the Marina, including Crissy Field and the Presidio, is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, run by the National Park Service (36 CFR 2.35).

Without a private home to go to, a consumption lounge is the place to use what you buy. Ours, the Marina Greens Lounge, is inside the shop; ask at the counter for lounge hours and house rules.

Don’t take it home

Leave anything you don’t use in California. Carrying cannabis across state lines is illegal under federal law, wherever you’re headed, and airport security is federal: the TSA leaves the call to the officer on duty. If you have some left on your last day, don’t pack it.

Getting to Marina Greens

We’re at 3109 Fillmore St, between Filbert and Greenwich in the Marina, a block north of Union Street’s shops and restaurants. The shop is up a flight of stairs; there’s no elevator. From the places visitors usually start:

  • Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf: we’re about 2 miles west by road, a short taxi or rideshare.
  • The Palace of Fine Arts: we’re under a mile east, a 15- to 20-minute walk through the Marina.
  • The Golden Gate Bridge: head east through the Presidio toward the Marina; it’s a short ride.
  • By Muni: the 22 Fillmore runs on Fillmore Street past the shop, and the 45 Union/Stockton stops at Union and Fillmore, a block south.
  • By car: street parking is metered, and the city’s Lombard Street Garage, 2055 Lombard St, is a short walk north.

We’re open 8 AM to 10 PM every day. See hours and directions.
